Program Description : Gateway School, a program of HASA, provides an individualized, comprehensive education to our students with communication related disorders and/or autism to guide them to independence in the areas of communication, academics, social and life skills. The students are provided with a learning environment to meet their individualized learning style, ABA track, small group/classroom track, or the combination track. The ABA track provides students with maximum 1:1 support. Special educators and instructors implement the principles of applied behavior analysis and research-based strategies for skill acquisitions. Students in the ABA track spend a large part of their day in an intensive 1:1 instructional setting. Students in the ABA track participate in small groups in shorter duration that address English/language arts, mathematics, social studies, and science. The small group/classroom track prepares students for success in a typical classroom setting. Students are expected to demonstrate more independent skills and classroom behavior with the support of a special educator and an instructional assistant. Majority the school day is spent in small group (7:2), with the flexibility to break into smaller units as needed. In the combination track, students spend a portion of the school day in the ABA track for skill acquisition and the remainder of the day in the small group/classroom track to foster pragmatic language, generalization of skills, and independence. All Gateway students participate in enrichment classes, recreation, art, music, and library, as a group to promote social skills. The educational program emphasizes on building language and communication skills to support the acquisition and retention of academic and social skills and the development of appropriate social behavior. Language experiences and direct instruction facilitate language, cognition, and academic readiness for preschool students. For school age student in Kindergarten through grade 8 or a non-graded program, the curriculum incorporates language learning within the subject areas of English/language arts, mathematics, science, and social studies. The development of social and adaptive/life skills for school and community is fostered throughout the program for all students. The middle school students participate in instruction focusing on pre-vocational language acquisition while engaging in hands-on experience and exposure to various vocations within HASA. Gateway’s curriculum and school structure is intended to guide and support students to acquire independence.
