Program Description : The Linwood School provides academic, communication-based, and vocational programming to students with Autism spectrum disorders and related developmental disabilities. Students are taught using a multidisciplinary approach in a small class size, no more than 6 students per classroom, and a staff to student ratio dependent upon the IEP's implemented in each classroom. Instruction is data driven based on IEP's, assessments, and curricula that includes Howard County Public School System, Maryland College and Career Readiness Standards, Alternate Education Framework, Verbal Behavior Milestones Assessment and Referenced Curriculum Guide (VB-MAPP), The Syracuse Community-Referenced Community Guide, The Assessment of Functional Living Skills (AFLS), and the TEACCH Transition Assessment Profile (TTAP). Linwood’s programming is designed to facilitate communication using multiple modalities including verbal speech, gestures, and Augmentative and Alternative Communication (AAC) devices, visuals, and sign language. Students are taught utilizing a variety of strategies including discrete trial instruction, group instruction, sensory integration, community-based instruction, and social skills training. A heavy emphasis is placed on generalization of skills across various environments and teaching replacement behaviors. Linwood utilizes Board Certified Behavior Analysts (BCBA), who develop and train staff on individualized Behavior Intervention Plans, as well as class-wide and school wide best practices. Foundations Learning Community (Grades 1–8): The Foundations Learning Community focuses on developing essential academic skills across all content areas while fostering communication, social skills, and activities of daily living. Instruction is individualized to help students build the foundational skills needed for lifelong learning and independence. We program for Diploma and Certificate track in the Foundations Learning Community. Transition Learning Community (Grades 9–12): The Transition Learning Community prepares students for life after high school by emphasizing math, literacy, communication, social skills, and the development of vocational skills and workplace behaviors. Through career exploration organized around career clusters, students participate in job training and gain valuable work experience both within the school and in community-based settings, helping them build the skills and confidence needed for future employment and adult life.
